What are we really eating?

Have you ever asked yourself what you eat each day, or do I eat too much junk? Well if so then you’re not alone! Every min of every day of every year we question what we eat. We wonder is it healthy, is it fattening, or is it even real food.

Nowadays almost everything we eat is processed or has preservatives added to it to maintain freshness. Although longer lasting food sounds good, it takes a toll on the body and our overall health. Think back as far as you can remember when food came straight from a farm and we ate it without adding anything.  Those days are a far cry from today.  Our generation may not have seen as much farms as previous generations, but you may have gone to a food stand on the side of road and picked up a fruit or vegetable.  If you have ever tasted food without any additional chemicals you would notice the difference in taste. You may find yourself saying, is this a real strawberry because the taste is so different but good!

The idea behind preservatives is to prevent botulism and mold. Preservatives keep our food fresher for a longer period of time. The problem is we are trading this for another set of problems.  Studies have shown that the use of preservatives is linked with cancer, hyperactivity and nervous system disorders. Many preservatives used for food are also used for cosmetics and cleaning products. One of these many chemicals is propylene glycol. How good for our bodies can it be to be eating what is also used in lotion and antifreeze? Does this sound appetizing?

Only we are responsible for our health, our future and how we feel. It is important to read food labels, and ingredients to know exactly what we are putting into our bodies.  These dangerous substances found in our food are allowed in trace amounts.  It is said that in these “trace amounts” they aren’t harmful.  In fact some of these toxic chemicals in our food aren’t even labeled. This is called an Industry standard. What an industry standard means is that if everyone in the industry is following the same requirements or using the same tools it doesn’t have to be labeled.  The use of certain products such as propylene glycol become the norm, and become an accepted practice. If these chemicals are so acceptable, why are our bodies reacting? Why are people increasingly sicker today? Take a moment to process this food for thought.  If there is trace amounts in most foods that you are eating daily, are the amounts you are consuming really a trace amount?
